Christchurch City Council recently approved the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan for Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour and Koukourarata Port Levy. Developed with a Coastal Panel of local community members and representatives of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke and Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata, the adaptation plan sets out preferred adaptation pathways to respond to the risks of coastal flooding, erosion and rising groundwater to publicly owned assets across this area. This Oceans, Islands, Futures themed Living Lab hikoi (journey) began at the Town Hall with a bus ride to Rāpaki which is the papakāinga (home) of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke where attendees were welcomed by mana whenua. Attendees then travelled to the Port of Lyttelton to embark on a Black Cat cruise to learn about the different adaptation challenges around the harbour. Onboard there were representatives of the Council, the Coastal Panel and Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke who spoke about the coastal hazard risks, the planning process and adaptation pathways, and the approach to community engagement, with a focus on the involvement of local schools. Representatives from Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke talked about their climate resilience and environmental priorities and projects including the Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbours project.
